Miami Blues It’s hard to go straight. Obviously, that’s Alec Baldwin. His best role. Same with Fred Ward. And Jennifer Jason Leigh. Understated pedal to the metal.

to stay straight. (It doesn’t get any easier, either.) Poor Gary Busey.
Sometimes there’s just no excuse.
Heavenly Creatures Yow! Kate’s first flick. Wondrous story of teen imagination and music and parental attempts. Where we learned to love Mario Lanza music.
To Die For ALIGN=”BOTTOM” WIDTH=”76″ HEIGHT=”140″ NATURALSIZEFLAG=”3″>Yow…what a weathergirl. Nicole camps it up with the very best of them. Juaquin Phoenix smokes up the screen. Matt Dillon makes his big comeback as the perfect love im hate im schmuck jerk but jeez did he have to die?
Bottle Rocket What do you do when lawnmowing just doesn’t cut it anymore? —You get James Caan to have a great cameo role. A bunch of neat new actors, one of which wrote and directed. His brothers are in it, too. (See “Rushmore” for more from him.)
Three Musketeers Some very lively guys. Oliver Reed is the man. These guys knew how to party. And so did this generation of British actors. (Reed and friends.) Raquel Welch is nice.
At Close Range Who are 4 of the best actors today? Why, the Penn brothers, Chris Walken and Crispin Glover. Darn tootin! Now, one really needs to see most all their work. But in the meantime, here’s a flick with all 4 of them in it. (They often like working together, it seems, but I don’t think anything else has so many of these pals in it at once.) Darn, a compelling, gritty tale of the honor of thieves…and dishonor. A couple dark, scary parts, sad to say.
The Duellists “https://outyourbackdoor.com/videoshop/6300217000.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg” BORDER=”0″ ALT=”cover” hspace=”3″ vspace=”3″ ALIGN=”BOTTOM” WIDTH=”76″ HEIGHT=”140″ NATURALSIZEFLAG=”3″>Are you lookin at me? I demand satisfaction! Harvey is a great hothead—a country boy who made good, I think. Keith Carradine is super as a guy who can’t help being just a bit arrogant despite his shyness. Keith makes a clever remark and gets “involved.”
True Romance A comic shop clerk nerd finds himself in over his head. …His lead role almost gets away from him as well. But with a flick like this, why not share the glory? Thankfully, Chris has “dad” to help him out—and Dennis Hopper steals the show. No, Christopher Walken does, as mob boss. No, Ben Stiller does, as yuppy scum. (Ben’s first role?)
Heaven’s Prisoners Eric Roberts is something else. When he’s in a flick, you know it will offer something extra. How does he do it? Certain actors are great, sure…but what’s more amazing is that they are always involved with special projects. And they seem to bring out more from their colleagues and make weakish stories rise up beyond just their own parts. Go, Eric! …And friends. Like Alec Baldwin. The only movie so far based on the great James Lee Burke hardboiled novels. There aren’t too many great American crime-style writers. He’s one of them. The Euro’s usually kick our butts here. So this is a neat tale. Hope for
more Dave Robichaux movies! (Similarly, Roseanne Arquette has an amazing magnetism for “max quirk.”)
Point Break Who’s the bad guy? Keanu, the naive, jaded (?) FBI agent? Or Patrick, the aging, enlightened surfer gang leader who robs banks to keep him and his buddies going in their disappearing surf-bum world. No one gets hurt, man. Can you stand the pressure of living in the moment, man? Quentin has a cute motormouth cameo.
Red Rock West Think you got in a little over your head? Nick does. Dennis makes sure he knows that he does.
Roadhouse
A little bar fighting.
