I recently returned from a pilgrimage to Cali.
My old high school buddies and I have been doing a biking get-together in the spring as a way to get a jump on the midwest spring. Actually, I join in when I can. They’re more the hard-working guys who need a break now and then.
Travel vacations aren’t a common part of a slow-paced indy publisher’s life, but I suppose this wasn’t a normal getaway. The airfare was very cheap ($99 from Detroit to Oakland on SW). And my friends and I had a great invitation from wonderful folks to a wonderful hangout in No-Cal. Then, down in So-Cal my aunt and uncle, who love to go out to a good dinner, aren’t getting any younger. So I try to stretch the bike outing into a way to see all my Cali peeps. (FYI, Martha doesn’t like to fly and the kiddy-kids are in school.)
It was interesting and totally no problem to travel for 12 days with just a carry-on. (My bike luggage ships to and fro with my bike via FedEx, $50 compared to $80 on the plane.)
I had a new minidigicam, a Canon SD800, which worked great. It’s uniquely wide angle and it’s been great being able to actually get good images of interiors and buildings, unlike nearly all other digicams.
I tried to jot down tidbits of public interest in the following 4 semi-brief reports, which include a few pics and vids…
2. Oakland Interlude and the Starlight Express
4. Club Cicada: a Vintage Night Out
Club Cicada: Roxie and the Coatcheck Girl
Hollywood Delights: a patio hangout in the Hills
A view from the Starlight Express…
