I was just wondering about what might’ve happened to an old ski bum acquaintance from Breckenridge days in the mid-80’s so I looked him up. Google is like that.
Biff America (aka Jeff Bergeron) was a wild character who had a public access TV show. He was from Boston and still had the accent to prove it. For some reason I recall him telling me his favorite novel was John Fowles “Giles Goat-Boy.” Never did read it, but it was a good recommendation.
Turns out he stayed in Breck and ran for Town Council … and won. And is still at it. He still does TV and radio and more. He also writes a back-of-the-mag humor column for “Backcountry” ski magazine. And he’s had a book published of his compiled writings.
He said he ran for Council because someone had to stand up for the Ski Bum. The average house in Breck these days costs more than $1 million. So making sure there’s a way for the bums to play seems like a good cause.
Crazy is as crazy does! …Like a Fox!
If you ever see him, say Hi for me.
I remember my neighbors in Breck having, like, 8 renting a one-room apartment — even their closet was rented. Then again, as part of a contingent there from Mackinac Island, I spent my first winter renting the end of a hall in an old mining shack with about 7 other Islanders! Skied 200+ days those years… Another pal lived in a teepee hidden *within* the ski area.
Here are two links I followed to sort out some recent scoop about this ol’ boy:
