On Jan. 16 there’s the 15km “Frosty Freestyle” skate-ski race near Brighton, MI, at Huron *MEADOWS* Metro Park [Correction: it’s “Meadows.” I had it as “Huron Hills.”] It’s the first time in decades that there’s been a Michigan Cup ski race in lower Michigan.
Our snow has been sketchy in the past but in recent years we’re doing better, it seems, so our local racing team, Team NordicSkiRacer.com, put it together and got it on the calendar. It’s sponsored by REI.
So go ski it or just check it out if you haven’t seen a bigtime XC ski race.

THEN! On the next day, Sunday, Jan. 17, there’s the 16 *mile* super-hilly Potto Raid ski party on the Poto Trail nearby. A different sort of event. It’s no rules, no fees, with beer in the parking lot afterward. I suggest classic skis. Any pace is fine, too. Race or cruise, it’s all the same. …The most beautiful trail around! And this way you can get your “skate one day, classic the next” fix downstate that weekend! …Sponsored by Jiffy Mix.
