*Great independent magazines are…
…few and far between. Here are a few of my longtime, reliable favorites.
RCN (for recumbent bikes and bike culture),
VeloVision (for glorious bike culture),
Rivendell Reader (for classy, classic bike culture and more),
Messing About In Boats (best boat mag by far),
Atlantic Coastal Kayaker (by the MAIB people),
Alternative Press Review (covers media issues no one else does),
Small Press Review (also reviews mags),
Backwoodsman (cranky, woodsy lore).
Interestingly, most of these mags aren’t available at newstands. They’re somewhat niche-focused, but should be role models for any mag. They freely interact with readers, publish a huge diversity, answer their mail, cross niche-lines freely, are beholden to no one and don’t have a trace of the ‘advertorial’ which has RUINED nearly all other mags. Bravo!

Boswell’s Johnson…what a read!
Jack Saunders Buzzard Cult. Diverse chunks of the Great American Novel free for the downloading. 25 years of fame beneath the underground. (Jack took down “The Daily Bugle.” No one read it, and all he did was put his livelihood at risk due to his stand on truth and beauty. Another failure…or maybe success, depending on what you think is going on in our culture today.)
“Vignettes” & “Blasts & One-Liners“–a Jack Saunders Sampler. A sampling of taste treats I picked to draw you in—and maybe give you bumpersticker ideas.
Jack and the Gov
It’s all True Stories…a drive thru Seaside and out the other side, by Jack
“Anglo-Saxon Rhythms in ‘Screed'”—the only academic review of Jack, by Jack Remick, U-W, (2-pg distillation.)
Reasons for Jack—an objective description of Jack’s six literary innovations (with sidebar ‘How to Judge Art’)
