I picked up this new $25 solo backpacking tent online. It’s the Texport Knollwood and it’s 3 lbs. That puts it in the “bivvy” category but they say it sleeps two!
I like it because it has a full-mesh option for stars, air, dry (buggy) weather. It seems fine so far—it just went thru a good rain and came out dry, and I’ve heard good things from a few people about it. I’m taking it on my solo bike tour next week.
I was scheming to save weight by leaving poles and pegs behind, but really they’re darn light already. I was going to make my own from saplings, etc. I think you’d have to add a bunch of eyelets and lace em on. The poles are also kinda long for bike packs—that’s a bother.
UPDATE! I used the tent 3 days last week and it was great. Kept heavy dew off me, no prob. Easy to use. Impressive. Light. Others asked me about it and were blown away by the price. (Just need shorter poles for bike-packing—or go the lace-up saplings route.)
