These titles are classics of the underground. They get raves. But what is the underground? It’s regular people who want to push farther than what they can find in the mainstream. It’s not extreme or exotic — it’s better and most of all: more relevant.
The content of mainstream novels assumes that you’ve bought in, sold out, not only with your daily hours but with your mind. This doesn’t mean just learning to get along. (Undergrounders are ace at that, even if their priorities are sometimes a bit different.) No, the limit of the mainstream is just that: it’s limited; it’s a SMALL BOX. Mainstream lit assumes Class Issues, it assumes Values…that are trite. It gushes and gossips…and embarrasses itself. It assigns nobility to stereotypes.
