Religion in Zining
Someone asked about religious zines and I posted about
a bunch of just that, plus about this new ‘alternative-Jesus’
radio thing coming around.
Anyway, I think that religion is a perfect zine topic.
There’s nowhere else you can really
talk about it much except on paper you bought yourself.
Religion and politics: not for social conversation: perfect
for zining!
Also, zines are about life, they have no rules. What better
scenario for having a bunch of whatever articles (fishing, donuts,
guns) then a religion piece tossed in. Hey, it’s a part of life, pro
or con. You do a perzine—you end up covering religion.
Also, you can go as far out as you like in a zine. Perfectly suitable
for religion and philosophy.
Truly these are both ghetto topics today. For a few decades
their only home was in Sci-Fi. In actual religious/philos publishing
you have to toe the publisher’s line or no go. Guess where that
leaves anything actually progressive or creative? You need to
preach to the converted to make money (so the heathen think,
despite the fact that jackpots are regularly won due to big shakeups)
so that leaves avenues that aren’t intended to make money or
else subterfuge (SciFi).
Again, did anyone see the big religion issue of Rollerderby
awhile back? Hard to miss. Good effort, I thought.
