…To evoke the following kind of email…

“To whom it may concern:

My storage was auctioned by the storage

facility and I lost all my books. I am replacing them

by memory, and the ones I most want but can’t seem to

find are the books by Jack Saunders that you sold at

one point. They were solid colored small books, blue,

red, etc. So are those OOP and impossible to get now?

I am deeply sad if so. Please write back and tell me

there is hope beyond abebooks.com.

Desperately seeking Saunders,

xxx”

Remember… Saunders is a writer who has professionally approached hundreds of publishers over several decades. His cover letters are the savvy and funny. His work is creative and pro in every sense. Grammatically spotless. He knows each publisher’s style and background…probably better than their (recently-hired) staffers do. …As a publisher I’ve personally received hundreds of submissions and cover letters myself over the years…many from professors and “pro” writers…none as good as Jack’s. Literally! They are in fact THE BEST literary presentation letters in every sense. (Short, punchy, etc.) He’s also applied for hundreds of grants/awards. He is totally indy and totally unconnected except to the readers of his underground editions and website (https://thedailybulletin.com). He has been rejected perhaps thousands of times now.

…Yet this is the kind of mail I get about his work. Thankfully, I do have a wide range of inventory in stock. We’ll get this lad taken care of.

Jack also gets hate-mail. He evokes strong reactions, pro and con. He’s gotten a lot of “best ever” and “all time favorite” letters over the years. He’s gotten lots of fan mail from other famous writers. His blurbs page is awesome in its scope. Probably no other writer has his bonafides. But one thing he’s never gotten is ONE lick of response from the pro trade. Weird. It’s like some day the dam will burst.

Until then, be the first on your block. You, too, could see what Jack is like. I have stock.

People used to like being first.

Now it seems that people like being the 100th, a la Harry.

Weird.

Interesting, too. It’s why we do what we do, after all, isn’t it. To see how it all comes out.
