Academia and publishing
Awhile back I was ranting about the decline of writing being
related to the PC publishing going on in academia. –I got replies
saying that university presses were publishing less and less
and that it wasn’t a gravy train.
How about this new angle: What’s the connection between
academia and New York publishing? What’s the role of textbooks
and professor books published by the mainstream? —I just saw
a list of titles on the topic of ‘problem solving’. There were about
30 of them and they all basically had the same title. They were
published by the mainstream. But I suspect all the authors had
academic positions (possibly in addition to others). I wonder if
ANY of them were original or any good? —Or if there’s some kind
of gravy train working there.
Here’s a good one: Remember how Eisenhower warned us about
what he called the Military Industrial Complex? —That has had
activists in a tizzy ever since. Did you know that in the same
speech (or maybe his next speech) he also warned us that
*far more dangerous* was the alliance that would tend to
form between business, government and academia! –That
was the backslapping dog with the real bite. Is that news to
anyone? I hadn’t heard about it until a couple years ago
(thanks to Jack).
