Here’s a link to a NYT story about how urban foodies and “locavores” (those who like to eat locally sourced food) are starting to take up hunting to get in better contact with the roots of the food they eat. Michael Pollan’s recent book “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” had an essay about his experience as a cityslicker in taking the plunge to hunt a boar so he’d better understand where his food came from. And to get the best meat. Wild is good. Cityfolk are catching onto this, despite not having any prior experience. Most hunters come from hunters. It’s a family heritage thing. To get over this hump urban newcomers are joining hunt clubs designed for nonhunters. They’re also taking hunting classes offered through continuuing ed programs. The article also notes that hunting is in decline and that 30 years ago 50% of the hunters went for the food while today only 20% do. This surprising influx of urban foodies might help stem the tide away from these roots.
To me, it’s been interesting to see the Hippie contingent become more amenable to hunting via the Organic/locavore/wild/sustainable/foodie/primitive Express. It used to be that Hippie was Veggie, but tasty free protein with all my listed perks has lured some of them away from such anemic staunchness.
