The quiet shrimp guru down the street

A couple years ago we heard rumors about a guy who was raising shrimp just down the road from us. Out in the country. Just a guy. Not some MSU researcher.

Then a little while later. A sign showed up in Russ Allen’s front yard saying “Shrimp For Sale.” And we went to his pole barn out back and sure enough there was shrimp. He said he’d been raising farm shrimp around the world and finally decided to come back to his home state, settle down and raise him some shrimp.

They’re cheap and tasty. And local! In the middle of Michigan! What a hoot!

And you know what they said about shellfish being bad for cholesterol? Now they say they were wrong. They’re actually really good. (Sorry!) Science is like that. I liked them shellfish all along.

Villegas, our local “slow food” (hyper owner) restaurant uses his shrimp. Good job!

Russ has big plans. He’s already helped several nations become more independent by growing shrimp. He wants to start something big in Michigan. I’m guessing he’s found a way to make it work, to make it safe and bio-friendly.

I finally got around to googling him and…no website. I guess I’ll have to stop by and take my own pics. Looks like he’s keeping a low profile.

You can get on his friendly email list, though. This guy has adventured around and has good stories. Write him at: Shrimpfarmarket@aol.com.

There is a nifty press release type of story floating around, though. Around the world. In global commercial fishing media, that is. Here are a couple links to it:

Shrimp Story.

This story is pops up everywhere.
