It’s the deer-car time of year again.

Our friend Chris is a local NPR/BBC radio stringer. He has a lot of mouths to feed. He married an African gal when he was stringing over there for the BBC. They have 4 kids. Chris really appreciates African culture. So when he sees all the fresh deer laying alongside the roads over here he thinks “Free meat! Waste not, want not!” Then he gets cop-permission and bags em.

Martha took these snaps of a recent quick meat-fetch just before a dinner party that I missed at their house.

Chris was wearing a classic roadkill processing ensemble that evening: flood-length polyester dress slacks and a satiny bike race team sport jacket…and dishwashing gloves. That alone had Martha in stitches. But the accoutrements of the evening put her over the top. Notice all the kiddy toys in the scenes. Life is a big mix over at Chris’ house!

A woodsman friend of ours, who has more-normally processed a lot of deer, was trying to regulate or somewhat slow down the proceedings. But Chris was rolling full speed ahead. “It’ll only take a few minutes!” “Hmm, Chris, some of this meat looks a bit ripe.” “–All the better!”

Chris was yelling “Hey, Martha, whattaya think of this? Great meat! Your brother-in-law Kelvin was a little grossed out when I picked this one up killed by his house today. I said What, ya can’t keep up? Out-Pottering the Potters!”

It’s true: meat is meat, free is free. And Chris is hard to keep up with!
