I’ve long wanted to put up an outdoor sports tool display. Why keep all that beautiful stuff hidden away? I only get to enjoy it, visually, when in the workshop, in the garage… C’mon!
I made one years ago, before kids, out of 2×4’s and nails and Martha said she liked the concept — except for the execution. So I finally STOLE the time and did it right, pretty much. I whittled mounting pegs out of my favorite wood — osage orange.
Of course, I would’ve liked to have included representative pieces from ALL my favorite activities, but as I worked on the design sketch, I realized that only a few things were beautiful enough or symbolic enough. Modern stuff just didn’t end up making the cut, though I could see a really neat display made of all that, too. (The wood kayak paddle made it through all but the final cut.)
In the end, I made a sketch and showed Martha and the kids. Everyone liked it. The only hitch was that M thought I was just making a neat sketch, she was saying she liked the SKETCH. She forgot about saying she liked my display idea so many years ago. The kids were more up to speed and backed me up.
Anyway, it’s done. I like it. It integrates. It has some content.
