The Everyday Hero of Ultra: Lon Haldeman

He’s cooler than I knew. The last I heard he was leading intense bike tours in South America, rugged rides in the roughstuff with loads, for like 200 miles a day. Be prepared. I read a tour report from him and he seems like a regular guy, observant, not uptight, likes to ride, prefers beat-up old heavy equipment, why not.

What really caught my eye was when I recently read that he set the 24 hr distance record on a velodrome while riding his one-speed commuter bike—he just took off the racks and bottle cages for the record attempt, and got 454 miles at a very steady pace of about 25 mph for the first half.

I also didn’t know that he’s considered the patron saint of today’s RAAMists. Cool.

Here’s the homepage for his cross-USA group tours: www.pactour.com
