Bob Gibbs commuted 24 miles year-round thru rain, blizzards, etc. from his E. Lansing, MI, home to his office in Dimondale, from the late 1950’s to his retirement in 1980.
His bike was a single-speed 1930’s Wards Hawthorne, which is on display in the MSU Bike Project workshop along with his 1st 10-speed, a Flandria.
He has about 100K in total commuting miles.
He also rode around town on a tandem with his wife, Mary, and their beagle, Bebe, in a basket. Mary passed away in ’03. We miss seeing the 3 of them, but Bob and Bebe still ride often. (Photo from the Lucinda Means Memorial Parade, May 2006, courtesy Tim Potter.)
Their dedication and enthusiastic support of cycling in the Lansing area have been an inspiration to the generations of cyclists who’ve had the pleasure to know them.
