It’s been a few years since I visited Gwen Frostic’s print shop in Benzonia. She has since died and her shop has gone thru many hands and many tough times but it’s back open again and in action just like the last time I saw it. No changes that I can see. Good.
Martha has visited more regularly. We love her stuff.
They print every kind of thing that can be printed. It’s original and affordable. And it all promotes nature and natural beauty and ideas from nature. Everything she did was amazing. And it almost came to ruin.
The shop itself is an amazing place to visit. Organic in style and nature. Curving, homemade. Grasses on the roof. Wildflowers growing up against the windows. Grotto fountains inside.
And no matter what you buy the ladies will offer to giftwrap it for free.
But that’s not all you can do in Benzonia…
Be sure to grab a bite at the Roadhouse. What a great courtyard bistro!
A couple doors down is Mecca, a super craft-art gallery-shop (park in back).
While you’re parked in back, check out Fernand’s Shoes, a homemade shoe store. All the shoes and luggage is handmade downstairs, but you can also get custom footware. He’ll make an outline of your foot and you get your simple-styled, classicly-designed leather shoes in a few months.
Then if some outdoor adventure is up your alley, give Michael Gray a call at Uncommon Adventures a mile away. His trips span the globe but he’s based in Benzonia (with a beach-house also in Honduras). He specializes in sea-kayaking and FOOD. Good camp food. Fresh, bold food — better than most any restaurant. He caters, too. People around here have him do quite a bit of special cooking. He’s a boss fly-fishing and kayaking guide, too. And he finally has his camp-cookery book coming out! It features a unique group-size calculator for all the recipes. And quick/simple food for the trail which you’ll also want at home since it’s so darn good. (I’ll be listing his book soon!)

Shopping the marvelous Frostic way.
