Nordic Heritage Sport Club: onto something?

You are currently viewing Nordic Heritage Sport Club: onto something?

Here’s a place that seems onto something. They’re not just a specialized ski club. It starts out first as a family-friendly place encouraging fresh air activities. Skiing is included.

This seems based on the nordic ideas of friluftliv and idraet, though they don’t spell it out.

They do say that something new needs to be done to uplift the community and to stay healthy as families.

It looks like a place that has trails that they use both summer and winter. It’s a start!

It all fits together.

Add some boating in there, too, why not. There has to be rivers and lakes nearby. –Canoes, kayaks, rowing, small sailboats all fit into the Nordic Heritage concept, I would think. Ice skating, too!

When some students at our nearby MSU started up a Nordic Ski Club this past fall I suggested that it be called the Nordic Sports Club instead — that way we could get going right away with trail running. And when our early snow disappeared — but left us great wild ice for 2 weeks everyone could’ve been out ice-skating. Nordic skiing, after all, is a year-round thing that includes all healthy outdoor aerobic activities on a seasonal basis. You might as well start out inclusive.

It’s like Michigan’s most legendary bike racing club is the Wolverine Sports Club. Notice it doesn’t have “bike” in the title. That’s because — if you look at their homepage — it’s dedicated to cycling…and speedskating…and XC skiing. Their logo used to show a wheel, a skate and skis. In the last decade or so they seem to have specialized away from covering all their bases to being mostly just a bike club, at least that’s their rep. Maybe they’re just not promoting their diversity as much. I haven’t seen a Wolverine jersey at a ski race in eons. www.wolverinesportsclub.com/
