“Field & Stream” finally came up with a winner. Actually, the slicks usually have a od article in each issue. But Dave Petzal’s “50 Best Guns of All Time” is the best story I’ve seen them do since I was a kid. I guess it’s played well for them, too. –I see it’s their #1 requested web story. It was the Feb. ’05 cover story.
You know I love a list. I’d like to put up more here! (Bikes, cars, books, movies!)
What pleased me was that basically all my fave guns are on the list. But I wouldn’t be surprised if most of everyone else’s are, too. A great gun isn’t rocket science, after all. There’s a fair dose of objective data to be had. What also pleased me was that so many of the guns aren’t pricey. A gun is a one-person device. It’s designed to be populist, essentially. There are fancy ones, to be sure, but most of the important ones would likely be accessible to regular budgets. That would be part of the point: getting greatness out there. Greatness for kings has never been that hard to pull off.
I have my own “best of” list here, too (much leaner and perhaps more sensible in ways, well, far thriftier). But I just found the link to this article and have to pass it along. Enjoy!
