Product Description

OUT OF STOCK! (I wish I had more of these cool items but I can't find any more base bags to modify.) You're looking at a sweet little bike pannier fabricated from a rare vintage military surplus base-case which has only seen moderate use. It's suitable for moderate city-bike types of duty. I developed this "upcycled" innovation several years ago. (I also note that all purchase proceeds go to support outdoor heritage via the OutYourBackdoor.com education project.)

This is a listing for *ONE* bike pannier. If you want *two*, just type "2" in the quantity box, or order twice! : )

One Option with Each: Each item comes with one of three options: *pannier, *shoulderbag, or *saddlebag/handlebar bag (w/ 3 extra straps). It costs $15 for each additional option (if you want more than one). Just add a message letting me know which configuration you want and I'll adjust your set-up and add any extra cost to your invoice before issuing it. If you don't add a message I will assume you only want the pannier set-up.

2 Shoulderstrap Options: I offer 2 lengths of shoulderstrap, and 2 types. The default strap is 1.5" wide, brown synthetic webbing, adjustable 35"-64" (very long), with black metal clips. If you are under 5'7" please let me know, as I have a better length strap -- it's dark green, 2", adjusts 29"-47." If you prefer the brown strap, that's fine, you'll just have excess doubled-up length under the slider. Let me know which strap you want when you order! If you make no comment, I'll ship with the default brown webbing strap.

Saddlebag/Handlebar Option: Achieved with riveted-on leather slots and 3 extra leather straps. It works only with Brooks-type saddle loops.

Colors: I have inventory in the colors of: *Light "Honey" Brown; *Medium "Brick" Brown; *Dark Chocolate Brown. Just add a note if you have a color druther! If you order a pair I can match them quite well.

Rack Clips Sizing: By default I install clips to fit an 8mm Blackburn-type rack. If you have a Bontrager (10mm), or Tubus (12mm), or a front rack with short spacing between clips, be sure to let me know! Also, let me know if you have a Pletscher rack (with the sprung top holder) -- it needs a longer bungie. If you'll use a rando rack like a VO, please let me know -- I'll set the clips a half inch to the rear to avoid all chance of heelstrike -- and if you have size 12+ feet plus a rando rack, it should go back an inch! Lastly, if you have a 17mm rack (as per some old Raleighs), it'll be an extra $10 per pannier as I'll have to hammer and rebend my biggest 12mm clips to fit, a tricky labor-intensive operation.

Logo Patch: Each item comes with a leather logo patch (as in photo below). The leather darkens in the sun. If you like, you can request a colorful embroidered patch (as in the listing photo).

Monogramming: If you like, and make the special request, for an extra $5 I can stamp your initials diagonally into the left front corner of the leather panel. Initials are about 1/2" in size and in a somewhat "Western" design. (I'll add to your invoice.)

Other Special Requests: If you have a special fabrication request, let me know and I'll see what I can do. (Sometimes people have me set them up for use on motorcycles.)

Details: I attach the necessary parts with hammered copper rivets onto a high-quality, rare, vintage military surplus base-case which is in good condition. The cases are used, about 80% grade, with some nicks, scuffs, stains and rumples — I call this "beausage," the beauty of usage (after Grant Petersen). They are very strong and made of very thick leather and canvas. It's like saddle leather. These cases have the most leather of any pannier. And mine are the most affordable of all leather/canvas panniers. And check out the closure-tang: sweet. Five metal button-caps on the bottom let it stand nicely and protect the bottom leather. I note that it's water-resistant, not waterproof. The nickel-plated rack-clip hooks are tensioned with a bungie cord. It's designed for moderate, civilized duty—for around-town with 2-to-10 pound loads. It's not meant for off-roading or super-bumpy pavement. I wanted to keep the backside fittings to a low profile.

Specs: The size is 8.5" tall, 4" deep, 11.25" wide. This is a small pannier. Inside length "as is" is 10.75". But it can be resized to fit 8.5x11" items: just insert a stack of a couple dozen magazines until the pannier is completely filled, tightly, like a brick, then let it "rest" a few hours and it will be reshaped.

The First Response: "Thanks! It's one of the best pieces of design I've ever seen." --Dr. E. Parker; Leicester, UK There have been many comments since, but that one is pretty good.

Refund & Warranty: If you don't like it after a week of inspection, return it for a refund. If something ever breaks, I can send you a part if it's easy to replace, or you can send it back and I'll do the repair. (They're very tough. None have needed repair yet.)
