How many bluegrassers out there are tenors and you can say that they’re bluesy and soulful?
David Davis and the Warrior River Boys are unique bluegrass.
Very smoky.
Bluesy, soulful—yet they harmonize like the sweetest of bluegrassers.
Davis is out of Alabama—I think this might account for the swampiness of this otherwise traditional sound.
Then there’s Owen Saunders’ fiddle. —Slow but tricky. Complex but so smoky. It’s called Florida Longbow, I think. There are only a couple heroes of bluegrass in this league. And Owen is one of them. The others are long gone. (Benny Martin and Chubby Wise are two I’ve heard mentioned.) Owen is the son of a friend of ours. A dry chip off the block. He’s big and slow and doesn’t make a fuss. He’s a great cook, like his dad. He doesn’ move fast. But when he plays that fiddle sometimes it blazes. Sometimes it so long and slow—yet even then it can be blazing as far as notes go, yet it comes across as slow. It’s beyond me.
David Davis is a tenor and a mandolin hero from way back. He’s the head of the band. These guys are road warriors like you can’t imagine. They do thousand-mile gigs every month like punk-rock-stars wish they could say they’d ever done.
Marty is a big fellow who plays stand-up bass and sings and also harmonizes with Dave like an angel.
Their guitar player is top notch. The talent in this band is first-flight. But their sweet, high, one-of-a-kind soul puts them over the top. Check em out.
