Bamboo Bike: for the 3rd world—and your world?

You are currently viewing Bamboo Bike: for the 3rd world—and your world?

Here’s a website for the Bamboo Bike Project. Have you been seeing bamboo bikes around the bike news scene? I notice them from time to time. They seem like a neat idea. Here’s a project where they’re making them for African villages. The design includes a huge rear rack for hauling the massive loads that rural farmers have to haul. I wonder if a front rack could be included—the front is a great place to put lots of weight (as we know from the Mackinac Island dock porter bike and its 250-500-lb loads, photostory here elsewhere). It looks to be bamboo plus epoxy-soaked carbon fiber lashing. Bike buffs won’t be too surprised to see Craig Calfee involved here—he’s Mr. Carbon Lashing.
