RAAM Starts June 8

You are currently viewing RAAM Starts June 8

The infamous RAAM nonstop bike race across the USA starts on June 8 (the solo men launch on June 9). Following this race online makes for an interesting week-and-a-half of web-action. Ya never know what might happen.

There are always dramas and surprises and upsets and races-within-races.

I like to see how the recumbents do. Every year they seem to do better. They might be finally coming into their own.

Last year saw a duel between the two leaders that got closer and closer all the way to a thrilling finish — when the leader — the wildman Jure Robic — suddenly quit. He’d gotten word that he had to serve penalty time-outs for a few infractions committed en-route. I guess it took him by surprise and that basically the calls were shaky…and very frustrating. So he just flipped out and quit. I don’t want to say that the race can become Byzantine but it does get tricky. Hopefully such details won’t mar anything this year. We’ll see!

Check out the documentary that I reviewed here awhile ago about it, “Bicycle Dreams.”
