Wood-Frame Race Bike? Wood-Rim Wheels?

OK, we’ve known that wooden recumbents have been around for years. It’s a dandy material to work with.

And we’ve seen the Calfee bamboo carbon-wrap-lugged bikes.

Renovo takes it further. They say they can give you a 18-lb wonder bike in one of their wood frames. And that they can custom tailor the kind of stiffness you want anywhere in the frame and in any direction that you want it. They’re even saying that their frames are more durable than metal frames. Amazing.

They make a citybike, too.

They sure look cool. A work of art…and useful, too, as their website says.

Revival: WOOD WHEEL RIMS

Bike wheel rims used to all be made of wood. They persisted the longest in the rough’n’tumble world of track racing. I think they were known to ride great.

Ghisallo is a European company that is reviving wood rims and other neat wheel heritage aspects. They also make wooden children’s toys.
