Hot New XC Ski Area: Aspen Grove

Lou Awodey ran the Boyne Nordican XC ski area for decades. He developed it as a major XC destination for the region.

When the resort began selling off chunks and more chunks to condo builders and golfers…and putting a dozen road crossings across his trails…Lou saw the future of XC…as far as he was concerned…moving in another direction.

What’s cool about XC? …Singletrack. A close experience in the woods. A chance to do some supercool ski handling, twist’n’wind style.

And that’s exactly what XC hasn’t offered this region in years. (Except to those who have the right skis and know to hit certain of the hiking trails when the snow is deep enough.)

But mt-bikers have long known that singletrack is where it’s at. That’s the choicest stuff. The rest is fine for cruising, but when you want the real fun, you need trails that are layed out with the true vision thing.

And that’s what Lou has.

Lou went and hooked up with the Wagbo Peace Center garden people (they’re at attrainternships.ncat.org/internDetail2.asp?id=399) because they have some SWEET land up there in East Jordan. Some of the most beautiful land there is! Lou built and now grooms about 20km of the most flavorful trails that an old ski dog could let himself build. Of course, he offers all kinds and levels of trails. But the quality has to be there. Lou doesn’t ski down to anyone.

Jordan is the home of the world class Jordan River Pathway, a twisty hiking trail and a tempting treat that advanced skiers only dared in the best conditions. Well, this area finally has its ski system.

I’m thinking that it’s likely the hot tip, the secret tucked-away hot spot for this region now.

So check it out!
