WaterTribe Races -- Under Way!
March 05, 2012

Two big small boat races are currently under way in Florida: the 300-mile Everglades Challenge and the 1200-mile Ultimate Florida.

I missed the start notice.

WaterTribe is a series of challenges for 6 classes of canoes/kayaks (with and without sails), sailboats and multihulls. There's a new class for electric-assist.

There has been a huge amount of R&D done over the past decade to optimize boats for water fun of this sort: beachable, comfy, seaworthy craft. (The outrigger proa sail canoes seem like a great idea, but have taken years to dial in.)

The homepage isn't very well set up for following the event, but you can do it by hopping around the racer blogs and forum posts. There is also a live SPOT checkpoint map.

This year there was a huge storm blowing up from the south -- and the race starts going southward. Many registered racers didn't even start.
